Step by Step

How to start your cross stitch -step 1

Step 1

Each square of the fabric represents 1 stitch, and corresponds to 1 square on a cross stitch chart.

Thread your needle at one end, and create a knot at the other.

Step 3

Find 5 stitches away from where you want to start insert your needle through the front, and pull through until it reaches your knot.

Step 4

Start stitching in the middle of the fabric (and in the middle of your chart) by bringing your needle up from the back.

Step 5

Bring your needle to the back of your fabric to complete your half stitch. Diagonally across from bottom left to top right.

Step 6

Bring your needle up through the hole right underneath.

To complete your cross stitch. and make another diagonal stitch but this time from bottom right to top left.

For a row of cross stitches, work in lines of half stitches from right to left.

Then return from left to right, completing the cross stitches. Always make your half stitches in the same direction for a neat finish.

To finish your project slip your needle under a few stitches at the back to secure it.
